Raine's Secret Garden

Licking the Spoon

Sometimes the fixings are as good as the cake. If not better. And I like to lick the spoon.

You know what I mean.
After creaming the room-temperature butter, you’d add the sugar. Yummm. I was ready to lick the spoon already. Then add eggs and beat until fluffy. Ummm. Forget the spoon, I’ll use my fingers. A little flour to stiffen it up & get it to rise–then the flava. The vanilla made it sing.
Hell, even before it went in the oven, I was ready to eat it out of the BOWL. :woot:

I once queried an agent for a full-length ms. She asked to see my first 15 pages. I was thrilled. She returned the entry, unfortunately, and wrote on the cover page: “Excellent voice, characters, dialogue. But you take too long to get to the sex, dear.”
Now, I understand if you’ve only got 10-20 pages to work with, you’ve gotta get off to a running start. And unplanned jackrabbit sex can be VERY hot. :humping:

But in a 380 page novel, my complete strangers were supposed to have sex in the first 15 pages??!

I love erotica. Love writing it (among other things). I applaud the way the genre is taking off, and it’s about time.
But personally, I like a little foreplay. I want to taste the ingredients of the attraction before full-blown heat is applied. It’s a personal preference, and I can certainly appreciate the cake both ways, lol!

But give me a little sweetness, a little mixin’ it up, a little flava before you shove the thing in the oven.

I like to lick the spoon.

Hmmm, don’t think you’re going to like my next story much then.

  • Jill says:

I’m with you. Gotta take the time to lick the spoon …

  • Steph T. says:

Why do I have a sudden urge for cookies?

  • raine says:

Tessa, the OCCASIONAL box cake is fine.

    Jill—yeaahhhh………:woot:

Cookie batter is a DEFINITE yum, Steph!

  • How odd? You aren’t going to have much of a story without a build up. Definitely not the right agent for you. You need someone who can savor the spoon.

  • jaq says:

Oh, bravo!!! Licking it back and front too. I’m soo with you on this!

  • raine says:

Jordan, you’re right–DEFINITELY not the right agent, lol!! I’ve backed off that search for now. Really want to concentrate on the writing aspect of the work.

Jaq–thank you! Great minds think alike.

  • Cece says:

So glad I’m not the only one who licks the spoon but I have a confession to make. Sometimes, when the kids are gone, I go to the LaMadelaine (french bistro/bakery) and I get myself dessert already made. Bad ASS desserts too. Every once in a while it’s okay to splurge, but I like foreplay too. LOL

  • Suzanne says:

An agent wanted you to have your characters having sex in the first 15 pages??????????

  • raine says:

    Suzanne–WELCOME!!

And yup. I kept the note.
And all I could think was–’well, geez–what happens then??!’ :wtf:

  • Mechele says:

Good grief. Definitely not the right agent for you. I like a build up. Get the sexual tension going. Can’t do that in fifteen pages of a full novel.
