2005

Big thanks to Mechele for the great interview she did for my newsletter, INTERCOURSE. :waving:
Additional thanks to my mighty webmistress for getting that baby out.

Someone recently asked me if I was satisfied with the way my career is going.
I opened my mouth, but couldn’t respond. I couldn’t give a satisfactory answer.

I guess it’s part of human nature to never be satisfied. It’s what makes us progress, search, strive. Crave chocolate.

When I look back on this year, I’m VERY aware of the things I failed to accomplish. But I’m also aware that I have made a bit of progress in certain areas—especially the writing.

I had three agent requests for partials (still on HOLD).
I was contracted by Loose Id, and learned a bit about the publishing business.
I had three e-books pubbed within a six-month period, most to pretty good reviews.

Am I farther along in my career than I was last year?
YES. :woot:
Is it far enough?
NO. :nonono:

What’s more—I don’t know anybody who IS satisfied, including one or two best-selling authors.
Are you satisfied?

This doesn’t mean I’m not grateful for what I’ve gotten in 2005. It just means I’m not SATISFIED.
What’s more–I don’t think I ever WANT to be satisfied. I ENJOY challenging myself, learning, doing different things.

There’s an old wive’s tale that says whatever you’re doing as the New Year comes is what you’ll be doing for the rest of the year.

So I don’t know if this would answer that friend’s question, but you can bet that, as soon as I have my champs, I’ll be picking up a pen–and a chunk o’ chocolate–and having back at it.

Satisfied?

Duh

I think I’ve done it.
I think I’ve solved an age-old mystery.

For decades, scholars have pondered this deep, philosophical question…
Why does Mickey Mouse only have three fingers?
(Yes, there are three…the other is a thumb).

I think I have the answer.
Because that’s as high as the ignorant little s.o.b. can COUNT! :dork:

I discovered a dead mouse in my house today. (shudder). This happens occasionally, and is probably unavoidable since I live in a semi-wooded area. But it still upsets me. I have phobias about both mice and dead things.
(and no, those little sonic-boxes do NOT keep them away…I threw away the last one I bought when I discovered a spider’s web built over it). :hushyourmouth:

And don’t get me wrong—I’m glad my kittles are doing their job, even though it breaks my heart to see ANYTHING killed.

And I know it’s my own phobia talking…but, as for the mice…REALLY now—how STUPID do you have to be to move into a house with four cats??!

ahem…

Otherwise, I’m just tying up loose ends. A novella that just needs polishing, a full-length ST that’s only one-third finished, and trying to decide which new project I want to start next. So many ideas, so little time…

Post-Santa

Here’s hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday!

I’m proud to say I survived, lol! Got a couple of nice presents. Didn’t put myself into TOO much more debt. Even survived the family gathering without too much more psychological scarring. :dork:

And spent the evening quietly. Had a simple meal, a small drink, managed to squeeze in a few pages of writing. Even the cats were content. Wrapping paper to crinkle, boxes to hide in, and a small snort bit of catnip to top off the evening. :smokin:

Some people find Christmas very depressing. For me, it’s New Year’s. So, in anticipation of that, I’m determined to keep busy. The Intercourse newsletter will (hopefully) be going out Wednesday. It features an interview with terrific Id author Mechele Armstrong. It also features the first half of an unpubbed short story. The second half will be mailed out just after the New Year, and probably have an announcement about a new book (out with the old, in with the new, etc., etc.). :woot:

Hoping you all found some measure of happiness in the holiday, and shared it with others!

My Wish For You

To everyone who comes here regularly, to all who’ve been kind enough to give this fledgling author a chance, to those just passing through—whoever you are, however you celebrate.

Wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons.

Holiday Cheer?

In an effort to avoid finishing a story I should be writing, I turned the tv on for a little holiday cheer.
It is Christmas Eve, after all—time for Scrooge, It’s A Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, etc.
I seem to have entered a time warp. I think it’s really Halloween instead of Christmastime! There on the tv was Village of the Damned, Blood From the Mummy’s Tomb, Exorcist: The Beginning, and Emmanuelle vs. Dracula. (I kid you not–check your listings).

Well dang! If we must have horror movies on Christmas Eve, can’t they at least be Holiday horror movies??! Something like…

THE TEXAS CHAIN-MAIL MASSACRE (just for you, Ames).

JACK FROST’S NIP & TUCK

ALL REINDEER MUST DIE!

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN’S CRACK-PIPE DREAMS :smokin:

YULE BLOG: DEATH BY SNARK ATTACK

RUDOLPH THE RED–TERRORIST AT LARGE

SLAY BELLES: THE SOUTH RISES AGAIN :uzi:

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MORNING AFTER THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

Yeah, okay, I know…get back to finishing the story… :poof:

A Rose By Any Other…

So you’re browsing through the bookstore. Any bookstore. Not looking for a particular title, just a good read.
And you spot a new novel by one of your favorite authors. Let’s say John Grisham (or insert name of your fav). You grab it, run home, eagerly dig in—and find it has nothing to do with the law, or conspiracies, or underdogs, or anything you usually associate with that author. Maybe it’s about a young couple establishing a worm farm.

Or maybe it’s Emma Holly sans sex. Or J.K. Rowling writing about a group of middle-aged people, murderers all. :poof:

Whatever.

Do you give it a chance? Toss it? Do you buy the name? Do you keep reading because it’s one of your favorite authors and you like their writing, or figure you wasted your money because you expected something else?

The subject is pseudonyms.

I’ve been considering pubbing non-erotic romance under a different name.
Why?
Because the common belief is that readers not only have definite expectations from certain categories and lines, but from the authors they’ve previously read. If you’re Jane Doe, and you write erotica, and that’s what they like, they’ll look for you. That’s the ‘heads’ side of the coin.

On the ‘tails’ side, if your name is already attracting a following, they’re likely to follow you to another arena. But if it isn’t the show they thought they were paying for, they may be pissed or disappointed, may not stay.
Then again—they might.

I haven’t quite made up my mind, and yes, I’m interested in your thoughts, if you have an opinion.
This whole subject gives me hives. Dammit, why can’t we just write??!
