Raine's Secret Garden

TROPHY

I don’t like it, but I do understand the rare occasions when my cats have brought one of their unfortunate ‘vermin-victims’ to show me.
As sophisticated and slick and independent as they are, they’re still predators, and sort of like little kids, wanting to show off what they’ve done for ‘mom’.

So was it just me, or was anybody else bothered by the frequent displays of the photos of the dead body of “the terrorist Zarqawi” this past week?
I mean, every news cast I turned on for 4-5 days showed this man’s face in death. And the Pentagon unveiled a giant close-up before the press, like it was some newly-discovered master work of art.

Well hell—why didn’t we just put his head on a pole in front of the white house so passers-by could throw stones and watch the crows eat the flesh?

I’m sorry, but I’m old enough to remember the horrors of seeing our own soldiers’ bodies being burned, put on display, dragged through the streets, etc.

How nice that we, one of the most advanced countries in the world, now have this administration and the media to do the same thing in a more civilized manner.

Meow.

Anyway—on a lighter note—congrats to Dennie and Trace for winning copies of Let’s Pretend in Eve’s contest! Hope you enjoy the book, ladies. :waving:

Dream’s Dream

I want to thank everyone for their good wishes. Please know that it meant a great deal to me.
My mom’s still in the hospital, but better than she was a few days ago. The trick now, of course, is to get her out before she picks up something ELSE (if you’ve ever been in a hospital, you know it’s not safe to stay for long, lol!). :nonono:
I’m also still under the weather, but life—and bill collectors—wait for no one. So, moving right along………………………..

It came without whistles. It came without bells.
It came without fireworks, lights or bombshells.
It came not in dreams, like the manna of yore,
It came through the mail—just showed up at the door!

No, Dr. Seuss didn’t visit my house today. :dork:
But I received a small supply of my first print book, Let’s Pretend, that I’d ordered from Amazon.

It came as I was steeling my sick self to go to work. I’m a little feverish, coughing, and I’ve produced enough mucus to float the Titanic. But there it is—a small box placed on my front porch.

I’ve got all of five minutes before I have to leave.
Five.
Five minutes to take a quick peek at something I’ve worked toward for a longggg time.
Open box. Remove book.
The cover is shiny and vibrant red, and I rub my hands across it. It’s real. Really it is. And there, right at the bottom, is my name.
On the cover of my book.

So I give it a quick hug, hold it to my heart and smile. It’s late, and I’ve missed too much work with illness. No time for sentiment, or celebrating, or remembering the work involved or all the doubts. The sucky day job awaits.

But one silly tear did manage to escape. And yes, I’m sure it was just one. One tear.
It just happened to be a really big one, and it spread out a bit and lasted for a few minutes dammit anyway and wouldn’t dry up no matter what I did.

And it may be insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and in the publishing world. Only one of many of my little dreams. Some still dreamed, some nearly forgotten.

But today I got to hold this one in my hand.

Encore

Okay, one more time…

LET’S PRETEND, the print version, is now available at Amazon.com and My Bookstore and More. It should be at Borders soon, I hear.

In other news, I’m afraid I’m really under the weather, and my mom’s been admitted to the hospital, so I may be missing for a few days. Thanks for your patience.

OUT OF ORDER

I don’t think anyone could deny that Alfred Hitchcock was a master of filmmaking, a visionary. He often said he conceptualized his films so clearly in his mind beforehand that he was reluctant to film them.
He’d already seen them, in their perfect form.

On my current manuscript, I seem to be writing out-of-order. (Indeed, thanks to Steph, Larissa, Amie, etc., it seems to be a disease).

I’ve NEVER done this before. I’m a linear writer. I think one reason I haven’t tried is because I always worried that once I got the ‘good scenes’ out of the way, I might lose interest in finishing the manuscript.

This hasn’t happened YET, but I’m still apprehensive.

How do you write? In a straight, chapter-by-chapter fashion? According to a strict synopsis? By whatever inspiration strikes you? And if you’ve ever deviated from your norm, were the results positive?
