The gentleman who took this photograph has died.
His name was Joe Rosenthal, and he worked for the Associated Press.
But his name probably isn’t very important in the grand scheme of things, and won’t be remembered by the average person.
But this image will.
You may recognize it. This photo became the model for the Iwo Jima Memorial near Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. It’s almost archetypal, has always stirred something inside of me. Here was pride, and determination, and heroism, and willing sacrifice to preserve something worth saving for their children, and their children’s children.
This is an image that will live in history, in one form or another.
Thank you, Joe.
Now from the sublime to the ridiculous…
“A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a Bush administration plan to allow commercial logging inside the Giant Sequoia National Monument violates environmental laws.”

The preserve is home to two-thirds of the world’s largest and most breathtakingly beautiful trees.
As if such a thing should ever be considered.
Gee, Mr. Bush…wonder what YOU’LL be remembered for?
(oh yeah—and I’m writing quite a bit…more about that in the next post!).

Gee, Mr. Bush…wonder what YOU’LL be remembered for?
Oh I dunno besides rampant stupidity? How about attemping to kill our OXYGEN SUPPLY
:moon:
Um… how about worry about the FREAKING gas prices instead of LOGGING. Sheesh.
I won’t touch Bush because it’s too easy. *ggg*
I always liked that picture too. There was something about it that screamed pride and determination. May he RIP.
Cece—spot on.
Mik, welcome to the world of little people.
Now shut your yap and pay your taxes.
Agree, Jordan. Tattered flag and all. There’s more than a mortal hand to that image, methinks.
As for Bush…
I had an argument not long ago with someone who said people should quit picking on Bush…that he wasn’t an EVIL man, just sort of an incompetent kid.
Yeah, well this ‘kid’ makes decisions that affect millions of people.
And his Playstation has nuclear power.
That image and the one of the naked girl running from an attack have always brought tears to my eyes and remind me of the cruelty of war. Like you said, individuals can be forgotten, but images like that never. They’re frozen in time, reminding us of the true nature of our beasts.
Tempest, very eloquently put.
