As a wise person pointed out to me, it’s sort of a rite of passage, an indication of growth, of progress, if you will. It will come in one form or another.
You can’t run, you can’t hide. :nonono:
It’s…the bad review.
In this case, it came in the form of Mrs. Giggles.
Yes, Let’s Pretend was reviewed by Mrs. Giggles. It wasn’t an out-and-out SCATHING review—but it weren’t purty.
I confess I was, at first, a little disappointed. Pretend had gotten fairly sparkling reviews up until now. And yes, I realize it’s all subjective, etc., etc.
So I went back to give the review an objective reading, to see if there was actually anything constructive I could take away from it.
And left the site giggling. :poof:
Yes, I am warped. And no, it wasn’t the review itself…
Well…except for maybe this one part…
“There are some really cringe-inducing moments in this book when Ronnie acts like a seriously demented creature…Something isn’t right about Ronnie, I tell you. In a serial killer story, she’d be suspect numbers one, two, three, or four depending on how many personalities are trapped in her mind.”
Not sure what it says about me that the idea of a psycho heroine just made me LMAO!!
And maybe provided the inspiration for a new book…
LET’S PRETEND 2: RONNIE’S REVENGE
Veronica Peale shows every plain-jane in the world how to get their claws into those handsome heroes—even if it means killing them.
She may be a mild-mannered romance heroine by day…but at night she dons her fishnets and steel-toed boots. Armed with pepper-sprayed condoms, a cattle prod, and butt plugs, she prowls the shadows of the urban jungles, seeking the elusive, cocky Alpha male.
Resistance is futile. Retribution is at hand.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
About a month ago, I was struggling with a new story.
Not that there’s anything strange about that. Some of them flow easily, some require lotsa painful effort, not unlike pulling teeth.
The interesting thing about this one was that I realized exactly why I was struggling early on:
This story did not want to be a romance. It absolutely REFUSED to be a romance.
It wanted to be an erotic horror story, with romantic elements.
And while there’s certainly nothing WRONG with such a story (I love writing different things), it wasn’t what I had planned for THIS story. :nonono:
I actually had to set it aside to work on a proposal—-but it did make me stop and wonder…
Did I intend to remain a romance writer? Is that what I wanted to be doing 5-10 years down the road? And if not, exactly WHAT??
So I’ll throw the question out to you, since most of the people who post here are authors, or soon-to-be…
Is what you’re writing now what you see yourself writing down the road? And if not—what?
