PASSINGS

This week marked the passing of author Kurt Vonnegut. Although his prose was a little dark for my personal reading pleasure, I certainly studied him in school, and very much respected what he accomplished in his troubled life.

This week also saw the passing of Roscoe Lee Browne. A man of regal bearing and one of my favorite character actors, he had a rich, velvet-deep voice that really, really did it for me (sucker for a fine voice here).

They say celebrity deaths come in threes. I hope they’re wrong.
Maybe we can count the end of Don Imus’ career as number three and Death will call it a day.
Even if it was suicide.

I’m blogging at the CHICA’S site today.
Bring your Double S.

WILD KINGDOM

Following 100 straight recorded hours of snow (I kid you not), Raine’s Ranch and Kitty Spa seems to have become the Predator’s Planet Hollywood.

I’m fairly used to the sight of deer, possums, raccoons, etc. here. Love the wildlife, the feeling of nature.

But for the first time, I actually saw a coyote this week.
In my back yard.
Three feet away from my window.
Must’ve been the snow, I reasoned, that brought predators so far out on the prowl.

Then yesterday, while standing at the bird feeder, a sudden flurry of wings went right over my head, and almost before I could blink I saw a small bird disappear from sight.
Red-tailed hawk. Cleared my scalp by less than two feet.
Must’ve been the snow, I reasoned, that brought predators so far out on the prowl.

And today, when the repairman I’d called showed up, his sharp, white teeth gleamed in the first sunlight we’ve seen in days. “I’m so sorry, Miss Weaver…but that garage door just can’t be fixed. Let me give you an estimate on a brand new one…”

Ah, well. Can’t blame everything on the snow… :nonono:

SURVEY

A few weeks ago, a discussion was introduced on the Dear Author readers blog, leading to countless other discussions in blogland (and more than one catfight) about racism in publishing.

Karen Scott picked up the gauntlet by asking black authors to participate in a survey about whether they had encountered racism in their dealings with the industry. The idea, I believe, was to raise awareness about certain issues that were either unknown to many, being ignored, or tolerated.

I took part in the survey because the bookstores in my area routinely shelve the work of black authors in an African American section, whether they’re political, biographical, or fiction.

For what it’s worth, my response to the survey is here.

And many thanks to Karen for trying to make a difference.
