A week or so ago, a local weatherman talked about witnessing a GREEN FLASH over the lake, a phenomenon occasionally seen at sunset in which just the edge of the vanishing sun appears green, or sends out a last green flash of light.
In case you’ve been to the movies lately and wondered if it was true—apparently it is. :yesyesyes:
I FINALLY went to see Pirates of the Caribbean–At World’s End today. Yes, I’d planned to go sooner, but simply wouldn’t do it until I was able to eat popcorn (at least, on one side). MUST have my popcorn.
I must say I agree with most of the opinions I’ve read about the movie, especially Jordan’s. Yes, it was definitely worth going to see. No, I didn’t feel like I’d been sitting on my butt in a theater for about 3 hours, so it was entertaining enough.
But I must also say it was missing some of the things I most enjoyed about the first Pirate movie.
The humor, and much of the fun, were practically non-existent. An occasional chuckle, yes, but not quite the same. I didn’t have any trouble following the plot, but still thought there was too much of it. They seemed to have moved away from depending on the charm of the characters, which I thought was a huge mistake. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the way the loose ends were wrapped up—often simply by killing off a character here and there. Everyone in the film had their own agenda, and nobody was sharing information.
(I’m trying SO hard not give away spoilers, lol!).
Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) was FABULOUS. His part was played with energy and gusto (when allowed), and he may actually have been the best thing in the movie.
Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) didn’t get nearly enough time in this film. I didn’t understand it, and frankly it kind of pissed me off. He did shine in the last 10-15 minutes of the movie. And YES—as was mentioned on Jordan’s blog, he definitely was HOT there toward the end! (keep the bandana, Will).
Must also be honest and say that Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) has, by now, become positively tiresome to me (and please remember, this is a personal opinion). Yes, I love a strong female presence. But she wasn’t a female at all in this movie. She’d honestly just become one of the boys. And when there was a speech to be given, she gave it. And when the troops needed rousing, she did it. And after a while, I confess I was open to having someone toss her overboard. Doesn’t anyone in Hollywoodland know how to write strong women without them being irritating?
And finally, Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) was…I dunno. It was as if they were trying to re-capture the spirit of Jack from the original movie, but there was so much going on it would’ve been difficult. Depp is always good, with leading-man looks (yum), but that consuming desire to be a character actor.
(Oh, by the way…the monkey’s personality is much improved, lol!)
THE ENDING has been much-discussed, and I don’t want to give anything away. I certainly would’ve resolved it differently…but I suppose one could say it was the stuff of myths and romance, of a sort.
If it sounds like I’m beating this movie down, I’m not, really! As I said—definitely worth seeing and raising a pint to.
Drink up, me hearties, yo-ho.
