Raine's Secret Garden

HERE AND THERE…

Well, I couldn’t be in Dallas this year.

My winter home in the Fiji Islands isn’t quite finished yet.

I simply don’t feel like doing the topless thing on the Riviera this year…it’s becoming quite a bore.

And Fernando, my hot, shared cabana boy, seems to have strained his back.
(I TOLD him six orgasms were enough for me, but he just wouldn’t listen!).

So I guess I’ll head over to the CHICAS to blog today… :waving:

FEELING LEFT BEHIND?

vacher1.JPG

(painting, “The Frontier”, by Christophe Vacher)

Feeling a little left behind, since so many people have made the trek to Mecca…er, the RWA convention?

Not to worry!

Paperback Writer is gracing us with a Left Behind and Loving It workshop, with some of the best advice you’ll find on the planet. And if that’s not enough, she’s snagged a few excellent others to post virtual workshops of their own, including the likes of Shiloh Walker, Joely Sue Burkhart, and Jordan Summers (who does not do Dallas…)

And if that’s not enough for you, Sela Carson has news about The Romance Divas Not Going To Nationals Cyber Conference, with workshops by the likes of Sasha White, Deidre Savoy, and Portia da Costa, plus lots of giveaways.

Lastly, if you’re just plain wallowing in it…er, grieving about missing the convention, Dear Author is offering you a chance to win a box/bag of books of RITA-contesting authors. Just run over and fill out a ballot, stating who you think the big winners will be.

Now, seeee?? Don’t you feel better already? :yesyesyes:

SICKO

This weekend I managed to watch the Michael Moore movie, “Sicko”.

I say “managed” because it’s not exactly a pleasant experience.
It will, however, be a revelation to some who have not seen it.
And whether you agree with Moore’s political statements or not, it’s a movie that should be seen by anyone concerned with health care for themselves and their families.

I’m sure everyone has had some experience with failure of the system in America. I remember a few years back, when my brother was attacked and beaten with a two-by-four by thugs on his way home one night. Following emergency brain surgery, he was forced to leave Kaiser Permanente just two days later because that was all his insurance would allow, even though his staples and stitches were still swathed in bandages, his hands were uselessly knotted, and his speech was incoherant. He was told to return in “five days or thereabouts” to remove the stitches, and because there was still the ‘nuisance’ of a small clot putting pressure on the left side of his brain.

The film is ironic but honest. And here you’ll find children in the throes of fever-induced seizures being denied treatment…eighty-year old people who can’t retire because it’s the only way they can afford their medication…a woman whose surgical claim was rejected because many years earlier she’d had a simple yeast infection…and patients allowed to die because insurance companies determine what’s too expensive and what’s not.

There are even heroes from 9/11, people who did NOT work for the city but took it upon themselves to rush to the aid of the victims–and who now suffer health problems because of it–who are being denied treatment by the health industry.

If you don’t come away from this film with a little anger—and the feeling it’s WAY past time for healthcare reform in this country—then I can only hope you never contract a very serious illness, or need coverage for a pre-existing condition.

Some of the French and English authorities interviewed believe their national health services are an absolute necessity because the governments are afraid of their people, so they listen to them.

Hmmm…

PERSON MOST LIKELY TO…

I must confess I was feeling just a tiny bit blue this week…

Until a discussion at work about a recent, semi-sensational crime resulted in my co-workers unanimously nominating me “The First Person They’d Call If They Were Trying To Hide Their Involvement In A Murder.”

Sometimes even a little dab of happiness will do, ya know?

I’m at the CHICAS today. :waving:

I, WENCH

Thanks to Ann, I am honored to announce that I am a Rockin’ Wench.
I’ve always wanted to be a wench, y’know?

And since I could only honor five other bloggers, I chose Amie, Vanessa, May, Bailey, and Bernita —whether they like it or not.

Congratulations, ladies!
You rock!! :waving:

BIRTHDAY HIT–er, TAG

Ann tagged me with a birthday meme.
And as much as I abhor tags, she’s so nice I decided to play.
But remember—you asked for it!

The rules are: You go to http://www.wikipedia.org and type in your birthdate. Then you write down 3 events, 2 births, and 1 holiday.

APRIL 15

Events:

1912 – The British passenger liner RMS Titanic sinks after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic, causing the deaths of about 1,503 people.

1943 – An Allied bomber attack misses the Minerva automobile factory and hits the Belgian town of Mortsel instead, killing 936 civilians.
(noticing a pattern here??)

1997 – Fire sweeps through a campsite of Muslims making the Hajj pilgrimage; the official death toll is 343.
(ok, going to make myself stop now…you get the idea…)

BIRTHS
1452 – Leonardo da Vinci, Italian Renaissance Roman Catholic polymath (d. 1519).
(ahem…cough, cough…)
