TRAIN

train2.JPG

Nearly every night at about 2:00 a.m., I can hear the distant sound of a train whistle drifting through my open doors and windows. It always has the most profoundly melancholy effect on me—especially if I’m writing at the time (which I often am). And as an author who often uses sound for effects, I usually can’t help stopping and wondering exactly why.

I know, for example, that most train whistles are keyed to a minor chord, giving them a melancholic quality. I’ve also learned that steam engine whistles tend to waver in pitch, giving them a sort of wailing effect. It’s almost like hearing the forlorn cry of a lone animal in the dark—maybe something we can all relate to in some way.

Then, of course, there’s the association with saying goodbye to someone, and of long, uncertain journeys before modern communication was so readily available. Old movies, learned behavior, or genetic memory perhaps?

You don’t need to be an author to feel this way, but there is the fact that the writing life, by necessity, has a certain lonely aspect to it…that no matter how many people or how much love you might be surrounded by, when it comes to the writing, to making that story real, you’re a creature wandering alone in the darkness, trying to find your way.

Who knows…maybe that’s why that whistle makes such a striking impression on me, especially when I’m writing in the long hours before dawn.
Kindred spirits.

STUFF & SUCKAGE

I’m trying to learn to be more objective about my own work. :yesyesyes:
So far I’m finding it to be quite a challenge. :nonono:

How it is that I can read over something I’ve written one day and think it’s good stuff, and read the same bit another day and wonder how I managed to dredge such suckage from the bottom of the sump pump?
And yes—change my mind again the next time I read it.

I’ve tried attributing it to hormones, mood swings, stress, or bad days. Doesn’t work for me. If these were the real reasons, I could read a passage by a favorite author one day and love it, and read the same thing another day and think it’s drivel.
That doesn’t happen.

So apparently it has something to do with variations in what I expect of myself from day to day—and how in the world do you get a handle on that?!

Geez…I liked this blog post when I wrote it…
Now I’m not so sure…

THITHER

Prayers and sympathy to all of the victims of the bridge collapse in Minnesota.
I drive over a fair length of bridge every day on my way home, and couldn’t help wondering what that would be like. What a nightmare.

But applause for the civilians who jumped in to help even before the authorities arrived.
Bravo to all of you.

I’m posting at the CHICAS today.

THE DISH RAN AWAY WITH THE SPOON

Finally, it’s nearly done.

The manuscript for a novella I’ve been screwing around with for quite a while now.
It’s been written, re-written, queried, lost in slush, re-done, re-plotted…but it’s nearly done.

I just trashed a whole chapter, re-wrote it and half of another. The sub-plot seemed too weak to me, so I decided to strengthen it a bit and give the secondary female character a little more to do.

And lo and behold—the cow just took her tiny slice of story and RAN with it! RAN, I tell you, as in virtually tried to take over the book!!

Her story’s pretty well complete within these pages, so there was no thought of giving her her own. I just hope the sub-story doesn’t overshadow the main one. It was meant to be a bit of “comic relief” from the intensity of the other…

But boy, I’m telling you…you can’t even trust your own characters! :nonono:
What’s the world coming to?

BTW—Dennie’s started a contest with neat giveaways and an open forum to post excerpts at the CHICAS site. Go forth! :yesyesyes:
