SCARY MOVIE SEASON!!

My favorite thing about the Halloween season is the flood of scary movies on television.
If I had the time, I’d veg out on them for DAYS. Screw the candy—give me the suspense.

If you happen to have cable, check out the BRAVO channel and their program called “The 100 Scariest Movie Moments of All Time”.
Whether you agree with their choices or not, the film clips are great (some classics, some genuinely creepy, some just gross–it doesn’t take long to figure out when to blink, lol).
And the commentary ranges from insightful to hilarious, with everything in between.
I’m pretty sure it’ll be showing Halloween evening. If you can, check it out! :yesyesyes:

It’s all subjective, of course…but what’s the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
(My favorites are above…both gothics, oddly enough—and that’s the OLD movie version of The Haunting, thank you, not that garbage they made recently. Both of these films still do it for me after many viewings).

GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE…

Remember Hurricane Katrina? That little storm that blew through Louisiana two years ago?

I remember it well, posted several blogs at that time. I remember the destruction. I remember the people, most of them already poor, being herded into a stadium, existing like refugees from a war. No supplies, no fresh water, filthy facilites. Families were separated, people begged for help from rooftops, and old people were left to die.

I couldn’t help thinking of that when I watched the wildfire situation in California this week. Mind—I’m not pooh-poohing it at all. An awful tragedy, nearly half a million people evacuated, many left homeless by the flames.

But just to make a few comparisons here…
“At Qalcomm Stadium in California…evacuees were camped in the parking lot in cars, RVs, and tents…tables were piled high with food…there were pallets of apples and bananas…stacks of cookies, coolers brimming with icy cold sodas…people waited for free massages while others circulated Starbucks coffee…mattresses and blankets were readily available, and clowns made balloon animals and entertained the children…”

Hmmm. I’m just gonna leave that sitting there in the middle of the floor, I think.
Meanwhile, I’m over at the CHICAS today, making changes. :waving:

PAYING IT FORWARD

For anyone who might not be aware of it, KARIN TABKE is once again sponsoring her First Line Contest. And this year there’s an added feature. For the first and second rounds (ONLY!), she’ll be offering opinions for those who were cut as to why she thinks the judge might have eliminated them.

Excellent place to pick up pointers, and TWO SNAPS UP for Karin and her very generous heart.

LIGHT!

It’s there! I can see it!
There’s light and air and water, just at the entrance to my cave!

The rough draft of The Novella That Would Not Die is almost done. I’m in the most climactic (excuse pun) chapter right now, and then there’s just one short close-out scene left.
Then on to the other novella in the ‘anthology’ which is about one-third finished, while turning this one over to the internal editor (who has returned with his arse on his shoulder) to add the icing.

I know this is a “so what?” kind of post to anyone reading it, but it’s quite a relief to me because I write so slowly. And this novella got shtoopid on me and turned out nearly twice as long (and much darker) than I’d planned. I don’t even know where to shop it—just knew I wanted to write it. :dork:

Next stop?
Mr. Pinky. My favorite unfinished story.
It’s time for some Raine Weaver Light, I think. :yesyesyes:

WRITER’S MATH

Remember those God-awful word problems from math in school? The ones that involved trains and mileage and fractions and fruit, and made you want to pull out your hair in frustration?
Well, here’s a fun one to start your Monday off right…

**A group of struggling authors scheduled their Writer’s Group meeting on the fourth Saturday of the snowiest month of the year.

Writer A traveled 50 miles one way, despite a paralyzing fear of driving in snow, with a rough draft totaling 38 pages.

Writer B traveled 8 miles, stopped for Starbucks and a new pair of Manolos, left her 13-page chapter at the store and settled for a 2 page synopsis written on the back of her receipt.

Writer C walked 1 1/2 miles, was splashed by a bus, slipped on ice, hit her funnybone, broke a toe, and arrived to find that only 5 pages of her first chapter were legible after the soaking.

Writer D drove 16 miles, during which she got a flat tire, called the auto club, took her screaming 4-month old baby into a warm restaurant to wait, saw her hubby there nuzzling some bimbo in the corner, and was a little late arriving with 56 pages of a manuscript that began with a woman discovering that her husband was cheating on her.

Writer E came in during the last 5 minutes of the meeting, dropped right at the door by her handsome Latino black-ops lover, and announced she’d queried an agent on a silly whim, was taken on immediately, and received a 2-book contract from a major house 4 days later based on 3 chapters.

**QUESTION: How many different kinds of bitch do you suppose Writer E was called?
