One of the methods I use to gauge whether a book works for me is if I don’t want it to end.
I’ve just finished Ann Aguirre’s GRIMSPACE. It worked for me. ![]()
I have no problem recommending it, if you haven’t already read it.
I’ve been reading a few urban fantasies. The genre does interest me, especially when it includes cross-over elements, such as romance, mystery, etc.
I also read one that rather bothered me. The protagonist killed someone in the story after promising to spare them, someone who was begging for their life.
And yes I know the H/h are not necessarily going to be heroic, and the tone is meant to be gritty, and violence is to be expected, etc. But that single action seemed to color my perception from that point on, and the book–and the protagonist–simply didn’t work for me.
But it did make me think about the fine lines between self-defense, killing, and murder, so I suppose that was of some value.
Jason Evans of The Clarity of Night blogspot has opened a companion blog called Night Conversations. It’s a bit like having a one-on-one conversation with someone from a big, comfy chair, like a more personal version of Post Secret. Stop in when you have time to visit.
The title of his new site is ironic in light of my post today—inspired (in part) by Bernita’s post and a little tongue-in-cheek introspection this week.
I’m coming out of the closet at the CHICAS site today.
Unfortunately, due to blog difficulties, I can’t post my usual silly picture intros.
But don’t let that stop you.

Spring is normally my favorite season. But for some reason, I’m not feeling it yet.
The grass is returning, and it’s the richest, thickest green it’ll be all year. Blush-pink magnolias are about to put on their annual show of southern splendor. The dogwoods are exploding in bridal white. Low-flying robins skim the earth in flat flight, plump and warbling. We’ve had our first brief thunderstorm, the days are brighter, and the evening skies vibrate like a clear, true musical note with radiant color.
And it’s all nice to see, but I’m still not feeling it yet. It’s almost like this winter was so long, so tiresome that I’m hung-over from it.
A few years ago, when I was basically writing short stories, I had a heroine in a romantic suspense series sweetly ask her lover if they could chase spring around the world. Just follow the sun and leave whenever the season changed to summer, to find spring and share it again and again.
I had to resist a powerful urge to violently kill her off shortly after that.
So maybe this hangover thing isn’t so new after all… ![]()
I’ve just seen a commercial by Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN television.
In that commercial, he stated that one hour of exercise could equal two hours of life.
One hour of exercise…
Two hours of life…
One hour of exercise…
Two hours of life…
Hmmmm…………
