Raine's Secret Garden

No, the parachute didn’t open–BUT…

I get it.
At least, I think I do.

If you’re writing something with action or suspense, or writing with the notion of making the story ‘High Concept’, part of the idea is to put your hero/heroine in trouble. And then more trouble, and more, so that it gets progressively worse, until it seems like there’s no way they can come out of it in one piece, right?

Okay. That’s not so hard. Really it isn’t.
The hard part is getting them OUT of that trouble in a way that’s satisfying without seeming extremely LAME after all you’ve built UP to.

Uh-huh.
No problem.

  • Oh my gosh, you must have been reading my manuscript. I have the H & h in a terrible situation and have to keep them there for at least another 100 pages and then what? Major gun battle? Near death scenes? Squeal, run and hide?
That photo is adorable. He could be my heroine – cool under fire.

  • Bernita says:

Yep. I did that. Both lurking trouble and obvious trouble.

But did I get it to boil and bubble?

  • BernardL says:

LOL, great picture! So… how did the cat get away? :)

  • Raine says:

    Squeal, run and hide?

Suzanne, I think that describes the WRITER under those circumstances, lol!

  • Raine says:

But did I get it to boil and bubble?

Only after much toil, Bernita. ;)

  • Raine says:

So… how did the cat get away?

    Bernard, suddenly there was…
    AN EARTHQUAKE!! :D

  • That absolutely is the trick. When you come up with an easy solution, please let me know. *g* ;)

Jordan, I very, very rarely do wallbanging with my books. But having an author handle this VERY badly is one of those times.

    An easy solution?
    Uh-huh. *snort!*

That picture is priceless. I love it! :-) Yes, I learned how to write better action while writing my action/drama movie script. It helped me a great with my novels. :-)

  • Melissa Blue says:

Thanks goodness I wasn’t drinking anything before I saw that picture.

How to get them out? That’s why I stay away from Romantic Suspense. My heroine once faced with a serial killer threw a coffee cup at him that’s what knocked him out i.e. defeated him.

Hence my career as a contemporary romance writer.

  • Raine says:

I love that picture too, Tyhitia, lol. :)

Yes, I can imagine you’d need to handle action very well for scripts.

  • Raine says:

Mel, sorry, you got caught up in spam for some reason…

Hence my career as a contemporary romance writer.

    LOL!!
Honey, I’ve inserted little mysteries here and there in a couple of stories. But I’ve never been completely satisfied with the way I managed them. :(
