Watchmen

rorschach.JPG

I got a chance to see “Watchmen” this week.
Interesting film.

Can’t say I “enjoyed” it. Can’t say I’d recommend it as a fun afternoon at the cinema, lol. I’m glad I got to see it, yes. But it was a dark, violent, sometimes brooding, often too enraptured with its own special effects film.
It was also one of those peculiar movies that left me “liking” NONE of the characters, nor would I particularly call them “super heroes”.

It was definitely thought-provoking, though. What would it be like to be a god? Would it lead you to abandon your “humanity”? Is peace worth any price? Do the ends justify the means?
But I don’t want to do spoilers. It might be worth seeing, but don’t go in with comic book expectations. It ain’t that kinda flick.

Signs of Spring

swallows.JPG
Every year, around the 19th of March, the swallows return to the old mission church in San Juan Capistrano, California. It has become a spring rite over many years, famous world-wide, and these sleek birds a beautiful symbol of the return of the spirit of Spring.

Well, the folks out east have a similar celebration, thank you very much. Every year on March 15th, huge crowds gather in Hinckley, Ohio to chow down on donuts, share cider, and celebrate being among the first to spot another kind of bird who also keeps a spring return, like clockwork.
The buzzard.
No, I am not making this up.

And with that nice, cold splash of reality, I’m off to blog at the CHICAS site today.

~~P.S.And for one huge helluva laugh, dash on over to Vanessa Jaye’s site to meet and greet “The Sekseh Stankonia”. Hilarious!

THE TRUE BARD?

Authorities in the know believe they have unearthed a portrait of William Shakespeare painted in his lifetime, passed down by one of his patrons, and upon which all subsequent portraits (inferior portraits) were based.

Please excuse an old-school English major if she just says…
SQUEEEE!!!! :D

I’m sorry, lol, I can’t help it. It’s a BEAUTIFUL portrait, and in EXCELLENT condition.
And might I add that he’s also a very handsome man? Sigh…

I’m blogging at the CHICAS site today, sans William. Please join us! :)

Sailing Along

sailing.JPG
We’re going to have an early spring. I knew it a couple of weeks ago when I started seeing robins and blackbirds, and it’s very early for them to arrive. So for those who’re tired of winter—buck up! Relief is in sight. :)

Otherwise, I have no spectacular news. Yes, I’m subbing here, querying there, checking out contests, etc. And yes, I’m writing. I may be subbing an anthology soon, but we’ll see. I really LIKE the stories in this book. But they are a little dark, and so far the feedback has been mixed.

For a while now it’s been like sailing in very still waters. Every now and then there’s a breeze, small islands in the distance, but generally the sense of being stalled.
However, spring is famous for its stormy weather. So we’ll see. ;)

My Hero

sully.JPG

This distinguished gentleman,Pilot Chesley B. ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, hero of the Miracle on the Hudson plane incident, is a big time hero to me.

Imagine flying that huge hunk of metal, holding the lives of 155 people in your hands, and very calmly advising an air traffic controller as you’re going down that you can’t make it to the airport they’re directing you to, and without missing a beat or becoming the least bit ruffled, telling them, ““We’re going to be in the Hudson.”

And freaking MAKING it without a single casualty, just landing that baby right on top of the water.

And once all of the excitement and inquiries have been dealt with, he quietly called his hometown library to report that he might not be able to return a borrowed book. It was left on the plane that went down.
The book, btw, was a volume on ethics.
They let him slide.

I LOVE THIS GUY.
