Yes, I’m late about it. But then, I’m not one for crowds or standing in lines, so waiting a bit to see the new STAR TREK movie was fine with me.
My initial reaction?
I liked the movie. Actually, I liked it very much.
I think it must’ve been difficult to take something as iconic as Star Trek and make it appealing to a new generation of moviegoers while appeasing the older ones at the same time.
Above all, I think the cast was superb. Well ok, I’ll confess—I thought Mr. Chekov should imbibe a little less caffeine, but really—excellent performances from the cast (and seeing Nimoy as Spock is worth the price of a ticket anyway). ;)
Very fast-paced, lots of action. Good backstory. I generally liked the way it was directed, though there might have been a few too many close CLOSE-ups, but no major deal. Had issues with some of the science, especially involving a character who sort of time travels and meets himself and that’s a no-no, but not enough to take me out of the movie. And they were very slick about the alternate timeline introduced, thereby giving them the option of not following standard Trekkie formula in future films. Slick.
But must confess I came away with the sense that something was…missing? Not sure, and I’ve been thinking about it.
It may be that I thought the original ST was more about courage rather than cockiness, and the indomitable human spirit, which was a part of this movie but maybe less important than vanquish-the-enemy.
But it’s a small point, and the crew is young and brash.
Good movie.
The thing I found myself REALLY wondering about was how this movie would’ve been if it wasn’t Star Trek related AT ALL—just a young, inexperienced space crew in the midst of a crisis.
Yeah, I know what the ST tie means to a franchise…but I think that might’ve been intriguing. :)
