Raine's Secret Garden

Shadowlight

shadowlight
Having received a free arc of Lynn Viehl’s new release, “SHADOWLIGHT”, I couldn’t wait to get into it. Unfortunately, that was weeks ago, and life kept getting in the way, durn it.

I’m now happy to say I’ve finished reading the novel.
I’m also happy to say I enjoyed it thoroughly and, although I’m no reviewer, would definitely recommend it to others. :)

The first thing I noticed when I saw the cover (well, once I finished checking out the droolworthy guy) was Uroborus, the snake swallowing its own tail. I’d used it in a story once as a symbol of something cyclical, constantly reinventing itself. Which is not only part of the paranormal characters’ development in this storyline, but what the Darkyn series itself seems to be capable of doing.

“Shadowlight” is the first in a series of novels about the Kyndred, beings who seem to be older than Viehl’s original Darkyn heroes, now discovering themselves as a new breed. There’s enough of the Darkyn presence to satisfy readers of the original series, and the connection is smoothly made. Ms. Viehl has the ability to write characterization, action, and romance equally well–something those who write understand is not easily done.

Jessa is a young woman who’s survived certain death, only to discover that she has the power to see the trouble in people’s souls by touching them and slipping into a sort of dissociative state—the Shadowlight.

Matthias is an ancient Kyndred, determined to keep her away from the genetic experiments of his old enemy’s ancestor. The romance is moving, the characters engaging (especially Matthias—the scenes from his earlier life were probably the most captivating in the book to me).

The Kyndred are not nobility, or knights embarked on some sacred quest. This is a tattered, scattered band of cursed/gifted people who appeal to that quality in all, that small, still voice that whispers of something different about each of us, something lost.

A multi-layered read that’ll keep you turning the pages and wanting to learn more about the Kyndred. Good stuff!
I’m looking forward to the next installment. :)

New Arrival

gift
I received the final e-versions of my soon-to-be released “Hotter Than Hell” anthology.

It’s very nice. Striking cover. And there was the satisfaction of thinking, “I did this. I actually produced a book somebody might want to read!”—lol!
When I received my first e-book release, I pored over every single word until my eyes were nearly scorched by the monitor. Partly because I couldn’t believe it, and also to see if I’d missed any mistakes.

I don’t do that anymore. And I don’t think it’s because I’ve become casual about the work. I like these stories very much.
But I’ve moved on, and I’m thoroughly involved in what I’m trying to do right now.
At least, I HOPE that’s what it is! :straight:

Yes, They Are

‘I don’t ask writers about their work habits. I really don’t care. Joyce Carol Oates says somewhere that when writers ask each other what time they start working, and when they finish and how much time they take for lunch, they’re actually trying to find out, ‘Is he as crazy as I am?’” ~~Philip Roth

Oh, Promise Me

hmmm
If I were married to the wonderful world of publishing, this is about the time I’d be seriously thinking about having an affair, lol.

One thing I’ve never quite understood about the business (and those things are legion) is that if an author subs to an editor or agent who has made known that their response time is approximately XXX (acknowledging the “approximate”)—why shouldn’t that author expect something within the ballpark of that date? And why should they feel reluctant to “nudge” said professionals for fear of repercussions, as some do?

This isn’t in any way an editor/agent slamfest. We all know how very busy they are, and the current state of affairs in publishing. Most of the ones I’ve dealt with have been pretty good about taking care of business. And writers certainly have the options of waiting it out, simultaneous submissions, or withdrawing the work from consideration.
But if an author, for example, promises the completion of a novel or edits by YYY, and takes two or three times longer to deliver…?

Hmmm. Just sayin’.

Still Stunned
9-11

9-11

Eight years have passed, and I can still feel the stunned disbelief of that morning.
May we never forget the victims, the heroics, and the special sense of country that unified us on that day.
