Raine's Secret Garden

18-carat

My whore has a heart of gold.

In the current wip, I mean.
As cliche as it may be, as much as it’s traditionally mocked—the girl has a heart of gold.
I suppose I could change her, to avoid possible readers’ gag reflex or rolling of eyes, but I’m not going to do so.
That’s her character. She’s not a Mary Sue, not perky, not blind, not stupid. She just has a genuine love for people, even if she’s constantly disappointed. Even if she doesn’t always have much for herself.
She’s catching hell in the storyline, and I’m catching hell trying to finish it. I guess that makes both of us cliche.
And I guess we’ll live with it.

Dark and Disorderly

I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom…

The wonderfully gifted Ms. Bernita Harris’ first book with Carina Press is now available!
:wootrock: :bounce: :wootrock: :bounce:

DARK AND DISORDERLY is being released today, as what I hope will be the first of many accounts of the adventures of Lillie St. Claire, paranormal expert and ghost-buster extraordinaire.

To celebrate the occasion, Bernita is having a launch party at Bitten by Books, and a grand announcement at her own site, here.

The book can be purchased HERE:

An excerpt can be found HERE:

And the blurb is below.
CONGRATULATIONS, Bernita, from one who’ll be proud to say she knew you when—and you were a kick-ass author all along.

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, one of the rare few who can permanently dispatch the spirits of the dead that walk the earth. Her skills are in demand in a haunted country, where a plague of ghosts is becoming a civic nuisance. Those skills bring her into conflict with frightened citizens who view Talents as near-demons. Her husband has come to see her as a Freak; so when Nathan dies after a car crash, she is relieved to be free of his increasingly vicious presence. Lillie expects to be haunted by Nathan’s ghost, but not to become Suspect #1 for her husband’s murder and reanimation. But what’s most surprising of all is the growing attraction between her and psi-crime detective John Thresher. He thinks that Lillie killed Nathan—and Nathan must agree, because his zombie is seeking revenge. Now she and Thresher must work together to solve her husband’s murder—before his corpse kills her…

Creepy

*****
I woke up from a frightening dream this morning.
I dreamed of poser figures coming to life, and acting out romantic scenes.
{{{Shudder}}}.
A seriously creepy dream. Something about them gives me the willies, even on covers!

Test

Changed some settings and wanted to make sure they worked.  Also getting ready to upgrade the blog so if I kill it, save me from Raine!

Five

Belatedly, I’ve just noticed that Friday the 18th marked five years since I wrote my first blog post on this site.

I’m not quite sure what I’ve done with those five years, lol.
I’ve seen my first e-book published. I’ve had releases, requests, and rejections. I’ve ranted, raved, reviewed, ruminated, relinquished, renewed.
I’ve seen people who started trying to pub around the same time I did give up the ghost. And I’ve seen a few go on to make the big time.

I’m not sure how much this blog has aided the process at all. But I know that, when I first began, I was eager to find discussions on the net about what other people were going through with their writing efforts. Maybe, in a small way, this has helped somebody, somewhere along the line.

And to the handful of people drop in pretty regularly (you know who you are)—I am most grateful
Thank you, your support has been sincerely appreciated.

A Visitor

*****
Is there anything more boring than a writer in the middle of a manuscript?
However, I did have an interesting visitor in the wooded lot next to mine today:

It’s a turkey vulture, much larger than the occasional hawks I’ve grown used to seeing.
And yes, I’ve made a note to myself not to fall asleep or remain motionless in the back yard for any extended length of time.

Paper Cuts

Yes, still in the middle of The Wip That Would Not Die, and I’m being forced to consider cutting whole scenes. Scenes that I’m very fond of.

The plan was for this book to be the first of three. But even considering that, this puppy is turning out to be TOO LONG. :poke:
Every scene has had a purpose, even it was something as simple as character development, but I can’t justify keeping them all, probably slowing the pace, and possibly putting any potential readers to sleep.

Editing of words, phrases, paragraphs—no problem.
But I must admit it takes a little chunk out of me to do this kind of cutting.
Just hoping it makes a better story!
