Raine's Secret Garden

Ghosts and the Internet

I’ve spent a good part of this weekend doing something very unusual.

I’ve been listening to my grandfather sing and play the piano.

What’s unusual about that?
I never met my paternal grandfather.
He lived some considerable distance away and, due to circumstances and finances, my family wasn’t able to travel much. The two parts of the family became estranged, as they often do. He died a few short years after I was born.

But through a quirky series of circumstances, my older sis and I managed to track down some information on the internet, which led to a little more, and a little more—and, surprise of all surprises, we actually found out he was a fairly well-known, well-loved ragtime pianist in his time, and had even left behind a couple of recordings of his own compositions. We were able to download and listen to them.
I think I’ve been half-thrilled, half teary-eyed for two days.

I’m not going to divulge his name (or the songs) for the sake of family privacy. But it was an amazing experience. Hearing his voice was almost like meeting him after all this time. And the man could really jam. Quite a jaunty right hand on that keyboard!

Thanks, Grandpa, for leaving such an important part of yourself behind, for everyone.
God bless the web.

p.s. ~
And oh yeah…I have been writing.

The Iron Duke

I don’t often do book reviews here. Frankly, I’m not comfortable reviewing the work of other writers—not only because I don’t feel qualified, but because I’m aware that I read with an author’s eye, which may not always be fair to the work.

I do make exceptions, however.

I don’t know Meljean Brook, and previously read nothing more than the occasional excerpt of her work. She seemed talented, and I thought I’d get around to reading more one day. The enthusiastic reviews for “The Iron Duke” from nearly every quarter convinced me to give this one a try.

And what’s not to love? I’ve been pretty ‘meh’ on steampunk thus far, but this book is exceptional. Plucky heroine, gruff hero, flying airships, pirates, scoundrels, zombies, and krackens–oh, my. As a reader it’d be difficult NOT to find something in this book you’d like.
The romance was sensual, the pace kept me reading. I sincerely liked the main characters (especially the hero, Rhys…BIG sigh), and rooted for them until the end.

But the star of this novel would have to be the amazing worldbuilding. Whatever Ms. Brook is sprinkling on her cornflakes should be shared with everyone. Amazing stuff. She left me well able to imagine being part of this alternate world.
That may, actually, be one of my few problems with the story. There was almost too MUCH worldbuilding. From the conquering Horde, to the ships, the mechanized prosthetics, the steam engines; from delicate devices for pleasuring to mechanized monsters that can commandeer city blocks. It was all too much to take in, too much for one story (although I see there are sequels to come). Good thing. I don’t think re-reading would be quite enough, frankly.

It has, I think, raised the steampunk bar to a formidable height.
Great story. Highly recommended.

JOYFULLY REVIEWED

In a move that left me shaking my head in (happy) disbelief…

JOYFULLY REVIEWED has selected my book, “The Last Man On Earth”, as one of the best romances of 2010!!!!!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Stunned? You betcha.
There are so many romances released each year, to find a review site that really, really loved mine?
Just… wow.

All of the books that were chosen can be found HERE. Honored to be in some very good company.

And to the wonderfully generous folks at Joyfully Reviewed—
THANK YOU!!!!

Happy V-Day?

I can’t say Cupid has ever been one of my favorite Roman gods.
He’s a bit of a momma’s boy. He can dish the love virus, but he can’t take it. And there’s something creepy about a guy who stalks his own beloved at night. :poke:

But to those of you who do celebrate—Happy Valentine’s Day!

Thou Shalt Giggle

Literary agent Janet Reid, who also runs a blog called “The Query Shark”, recently received a unique submission.

She was queried by The Lord.
Yes. A query for The Bible.

I love the way the creative mind works, lol. And although some people naturally took offense, I thought it was great. Gave me a giggle on a dreary winter day.
The responses weren’t bad either.
My favorite?
“See? NOBODY’S having any luck landing an agent.”

The post can be found here.

On the home front?
Lots of cold and snow, and the writing seems very forced these days. I take that to mean I’m out of practice. Fortunately, I’m also stubborn.
Onward.
