Raine's Secret Garden

1K In 1

I participated in something this weekend I’d never tried before.

Along with a handful of authors from Twitter, I joined in a “1K in 1 Hour” challenge. I didn’t believe for a minute I could write one thousand words in one hour. I’m a slow writer under the best of circumstances, and this weekend was far from the best, lol.

But I gave it a shot, and the results surprised me.
The first hour I tried it, I actually hammered out 772 words.
That evening, despite a slightly late start, I managed 500 within the hour.
The prose was far from perfect. The result would be considered rough.
Still, I was stunned. I can’t usually write for that amount of time without backtracking, fixing something, or being somehow distracted. My internal editor can only take so much streaming drivel.
The only explanation I can come up with for making it is that my IE allowed it knowing that it was only for a limited time—one hour.
It’s stuff that’ll need editing and tweaking, but it definitely helped move the story forward.
I may have to try this, with or without company, a little more often.

And on another positive note…Spring is trickling in!
I HAVE BLACKBIRDS!
I HAVE ROBINS!
I HAVE CHIPMUNKS!
I HAVE PEEPERS!
We also have snow in the forecast for later in the week.
Yup. Sounds like one of our Springs.

Visitation

Psst!

Hi, there!
I’m speaking quietly, because I’ve got company. At the moment, she’s resting, and I don’t want to disturb her in any way.

The MUSE came to visit!! :bounce:

The last few days have been a fever of non-stop excitement in her wake. The lady knows how to bring a party. For the moment, all systems are GO, the fingers are flying, and I can’t believe how much I’m enjoying it.
There’s a price to pay, of course. No housework done. No cooking. No clothes washed. Not much attention paid to the pets, and I’m barely squeezing in this blog.
But loving the results so far.

Gotta dash. I’m off to hand-feed my guest sweet seedless grapes while I fawn over her with a leafy palm branch.
Maybe I can even convice her to stay awhile…

And Stuff

Although I enjoy visiting the blogs of people with diverse interests, and I never planned to talk exclusively about “the craft” here anyway…it occurs to me I should occasionally talk about my writing, lol.

Since I reported on the Chica’s blog that I’d received my very first R&R, I haven’t touched the ms. It’s not that I don’t intend to do so. I think it’s a damn good idea for a story, and I really like the characters. Resentful? No. I’m sure the editor knows more about what will sell and what won’t than I do. Confidence issue? Possibly a little rock of the boat. But that can be a good thing. Wouldn’t want to get too comfy on the hamster wheel.
But I did get some valuable feedback from a buddy (thanx, VJ!), and may actually drag the novella out of stasis this weekend. Feeling the itch. Maybe I’ll scratch.

The never-ending novel, aka “The Vampires I Created To Haunt My Waking Moments”, is progressing. Think I knocked out about fifteen pages this week. The problem is that I know exactly what the problems are with writing this book. I’m not sure it’s “unique” enough for an already-flooded market, and I seem to keep straying away from the main characters (although it’s good to know I like the supporting ones so much).
I also know what makes me love this manuscript. There is no black and white, no clear-cut line between good and evil. The hero is an assassin, and the heroine is, technically, a prostitute.
I think I love them. And it’ll have to be the love of the story and protagonists that makes me finish this one.

Haunting my desktop and darn-near finished…a short-short erotica, an alternate-reality novella (done, but needs revising), and a full-length urban fantasy that’s been whispering sinfully to me. One of more of these may become self-pubbed or posted here as a free read. Haven’t decided yet, but thinking on it.

And I had an actual ROBIN sighting this week! Of course, I’ve seen plenty of pissed-off robins slammed by snow, but it’s a good sign. Spring usually brings a little more vitality to the work.

So there’s my stuff. Hoping to add better stuff in time, and here’s hoping you and your stuff are merrily rolling along too.
