Raine's Secret Garden

at sea_2

Yes, I know! I suck, lol! :big: It’s the end of March already, & I haven’t been posting!

I’m going to be for real about this. I’m not going to be a frequent blogger. It’s not ‘in’ me anymore. I am hoping to keep the blog going–or to set up a new one, for book & publication news, if any. We’ll see how things go…

Currently finding myself in an interesting space, as are many of my fellow authors.

About a year ago, I had seven books with three different, respected e-publishers. I now have only one short novella in that category. Having the publishers go belly-up has one positive aspect; all of our books are now completely ours, to handle as we please.

However, the bad news is also that our books are now completely ours! Yes, we can re-publish them ourselves. But that also means updating content (if they’re more than a couple of years old), paying for new covers, formatting, etc., & losing the benefits of house ‘promo’. It also means putting your baby out there into a sea of other ebooks currently being self-pubbed—and if you don’t have a notable name or following, you’re liable to get lost in that ocean.

So right now, a lot of my babies have returned to the nest. And while it’s nice to have them home, they’re gonna have to hit the bricks and bring in some $$$. Being an artist is all well & good, but nobody really wants to starve.

I’m not sure I’m cut out for self-pubbing. So far, it seems like things go wrong at just the right times! First the computer was running at a snail’s pace. Then Amazon decided to stall out on posting it. And finally, the electricity went off today. Big boom outside–power gone.
But I promised myself I’d have this sucker ready for release on September 20th.
And dammit–it’s released!

When her best friend’s boy-toy offers to help Veronica snare the man she wants, she doesn’t take it seriously. But the games begin to work, and every day in Brant’s company is a sexy new lesson. It’s the most fun she’s ever had—until the fantasy becomes too real, and unexpectedly dangerous.

Brant is fine with pretending to be Veronica’s lover—if it gets him the priceless antiques his employers think she’s stolen. Believing the worst about people has always worked for him. And if teaching sweet little Ronnie the neglected art of subtle seduction gets him what he wants, he’s all in. And maybe one deadly step beyond

I’ve enjoyed dabbling in drawing & painting for some time now. I was even fortunate enough to have a few pieces hang in a regional gallery. (Sidenote–highly recommend the book “Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain” by Betty Edwards, which taught me a great deal, as I had no natural talent).

But I’ve never felt the urge to be a Graphic artist. I already need frequent breaks from staring at a screen, & my computer isn’t equipped for the task.
HOWEVER! Even though the indie book was all set for publication, I discovered this model’s photo & had to do SOMETHING with it. She looked almost exactly as I’d pictured Serafina–Sera–the heroine of “INCUBUS.”
So I tinkered with the contrasts, changed the background, tried to fix a mood, & pretty much got on my own nerves, lol. :big:

This program won’t present a larger image here. And it’s not a cover. I suppose it’s called a ‘teaser’.
But this is Serafina, feeling the presence of her lover.
This is Sera.

Locked & Loaded

Somewhere between health issues, one more surgery (hopefully the last), & daily living, I’ve been trying to get “Incubus” out as my first indie publication.
I can already see it’s not going to be my favorite process, lol. At the risk of repeating myself for the umpteenth time–all I ever really wanted to do was write. It almost seems like that’s the LEAST important part of the process now.
But I have managed to wrangle my way through getting it uploaded to Kindle. Now I need to go for B&N, & take a look at the other options. And while I had aimed for February 29th as a release date (I thought Leap Day would be good for taking the leap, lol), I’ve already pushed it back a week, & will see if I can make that.
I’m going to force myself not to worry about numbers initially. I don’t have a big name, & there are thousands of people posting on KDP right now. Just trying to take it as it goes.
And I still haven’t given up completely on traditional publishing. I’d still dearly love to get my vamp trilogy there. It’s sort of special to me.
But again–we’ll see.

Cover Reveal

Sometimes I forget how difficult it can be to produce a picture that encapsulates all of the important elements in a novel, or even a rich descriptive passage (and vice-versa, of course). All of this comes home when it’s time to select a cover. Whether it’s trying to give a fleeting impression of what’s inside, or several pieces of a master puzzle, it ain’t easy. So cudos to all the pubbed authors and graphic artists who work with them out there. Amazing work when you think about it.
Thank you P and N Graphics.

The new cover for the re-release of INCUBUS.
Coming soon. :big:

No Evil

no evil

Current progress:
I’m still working to get the website updated as far as old/new versions of my books, and getting my sorely-neglected newsletter back in order. Actually, the temptation is to start fresh with a new look for the blog. I’ve had this one for several years now, and I have seen a couple of other templates I like. But I don’t want to wind up using it as a distraction, which would be easy to do. I think I’ll see how the new publishing direction goes, and try to focus on the writing at the mo.

The good news is that I have settled on a formatter–someone who’s also an author and knows the ropes. I’ve also found the cover artist I want to start with. He’s actually done a couple for me in the past, and when I found out he also freelances I figured yeah–we should do this. That’s assuming he doesn’t go running for the hills after the wordy art request I sent him, lol.

And finally…
Since I’ve been on Facebook for a few weeks now, I can see that the thing is actually a lifestyle for some people. I don’t personally feel the allure of the addiction to the media; I can see using it for writing/publishing news, or casual short conversation. But I’ve already ‘unfriended’ a citizen or two who felt that Facebook was a forum for all the vitriol they could manage to spew.
And while I fully intend to use it for promotion, :big: I must admit I’ve never seen so much promo outside of all the infomericals that populate tv in the wee hours! Geez! If that’s all you have to talk about, why would anyone want to listen?!
